Minister-President Cem Özdemir visits HENSOLDT in Oberkochen
Minister-President Cem Özdemir visited the new HENSOLDT campus in Oberkochen. The focus of the visit was on the industrial base for defence electronics in Baden-Württemberg, the expansion of manufacturing capacity and jobs, and the role of software and artificial intelligence in transforming the development of modern defence systems. The programme also included discussions with the Group’s senior management and apprentices, as well as a tour of the production facilities.
Oliver Dörre, CEO of HENSOLDT, said: “Baden-Württemberg is home to our largest sites. It is here that we develop and manufacture the systems that will define the next generation of defence capabilities. In Oberkochen, we combine decades of precision manufacturing with the speed of modern software. This is the combination that Germany and Europe need right now. At the same time, it creates skilled jobs and adds value here in the region.”
Minister-President Özdemir said: “The solutions developed in Oberkochen are an outstanding example of the strengths of Baden-Württemberg as an industrial hub: not only are technologies developed here, but the course is also being set for future-proof defence capabilities. Precision, technical excellence and investment in the future are the cornerstones on which the development of successful next-generation defence technology is based. HENSOLDT demonstrates this impressively here in our state.”
The Minister-President was briefed on current developments in optronic and radar-based reconnaissance, electromagnetic warfare and AI-based sensor data fusion. The common element linking these systems is the MDOcore software suite, which networks sensors, weapon systems and command levels across the land, air, sea, cyber and space domains, and consolidates sensor data into a shared situational picture within seconds.
Building on this foundation, HENSOLDT is expanding its role as a neo-systems house: it combines the experience of the established defence industry in certified development and reliable series production with the speed of the software world, which delivers in weeks rather than years.
For decades, Oberkochen has been synonymous with German precision in optics and optronics. HENSOLDT recently opened its new campus there: a new building that brings together the development, manufacture and integration of optronic systems under one roof and accommodates around 1,000 employees. HENSOLDT has invested around 300 million euros. The campus meets a large proportion of its energy requirements from its own renewable sources.
