SERO 250 A / 250 S
Optimal periscope retrofit solution
The challenge
Modern navies are facing an increasingly complex and dynamic operational environment. Submarines must adapt quickly to changing mission requirements, whether for tactical or surveillance roles, while handling rising demands in complex operations.
Operating in unpredictable weather and lighting conditions adds further challenges, as submarines need systems capable of reliably detecting and identifying targets, even in low-light or nighttime scenarios.
These operational needs may quickly become overwhelming for all but the newest submarines, forcing navies to consider frequent upgrades, retrofits or modernisation of the equipment used on their vessels. As retrofits are executed within the constraints of legacy platforms, navies require technical solutions that minimise the integration effort and risk while maximising the benefits.
Our solution
The SERO 250 periscope has been designed for retrofit projects, specifically to minimise the technical risks associated with integrating new technology into older submarines, particularly diesel-electric submarines (SSKs). This true periscope features a direct-view glass channel and a traditional ocular box design, making it a reliable choice for operators. Its form factor has been optimised to serve as a “drop-in solution”, allowing for the replacement of outdated periscopes with minimal or no intervention required on the submarine hull.
To accommodate the constraints of older submarines, the SERO 250 and its inboard electronics have been carefully engineered to fit within the limited space available. Despite these size considerations, the periscope does not compromise on performance. It is equipped with modern cameras, a laser range finder and an optional MWIR thermal imager, providing enhanced night vision capabilities for a comprehensive operational advantage.
Furthermore, the SERO 250 offers flexible interfaces, which allow it to be fully operated in stand-alone mode from its ocular box or seamlessly integrated within either legacy or new combat management systems. This versatility ensures that submariners can leverage the latest technology while maintaining compatibility with existing systems, making the SERO 250 an ideal solution for enhancing the capabilities of existing submarine flotillas.
