HENSOLDT awards Argus prize to graduates
Prize for outstanding research achievements in the natural sciences and engineering awarded for the 22nd time
Sensor specialist HENSOLDT has awarded the ‘Argus’ research prize to students as part of its cooperation with research institutions and universities. This prestigious prize is awarded annually for outstanding theses by young scientists in the fields of high-frequency technology, algorithms, signal processing, artificial intelligence and information technologies. The award ceremony was the highlight of the Professors' Day at HENSOLDT's Ulm site.
Dr Jürgen Bestle, HENSOLDT Chief Technology Officer, said: “Close cooperation with research institutions, colleges and universities is a key factor for us in achieving innovation and sustainable progress. It enables us to put the latest scientific findings into practice at an early stage and incorporate them into the further development of our product portfolio.”
A jury consisting of university professors and experts from defence and aerospace companies selected the best 24 theses from all applicants and honoured them. Two graduates were awarded prizes for the best Master's thesis: Caterina Klumpp, German Space Agency at the German Aerospace Center in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, developed a method for investigating and reducing interference from radio frequencies that impair data quality and are detected by synthetic aperture radars in the X-band. In his thesis, Daniel Laqua, University of Ulm, developed a radar technology method for identifying and distinguishing different crops using drones. This method collects precise data on plants, which has the potential to optimise agriculture through improved monitoring and analysis of plant stocks. Oliver Genter, University of Ulm, received the award for the best bachelor's thesis. In his thesis, he analysed the effects of phase noise on performance and signal processing in radar-based networks.
The winners of the competition were awarded prize money of €2,000. Second place received €1,500, while third place received €1,000. In recognition of their outstanding achievements, HENSOLDT also awarded the fourth-place winners, who received prize money of €500 this year.
In addition to the award ceremony, the Professors' Day provided an opportunity for exchange and gave young scientists an insight into the diverse job opportunities at HENSOLDT. Dr Guy Kouemou, HENSOLDT Group Technology Coordinator, sums up: “Professor Day is an important opportunity for us to engage in direct dialogue with young scientists and show them how innovative and diverse the work at HENSOLDT is. We want to promote talent and shape the future of defence technology together.”
