MOCASSIN

Monte Carlo Sound Beam Intensities
U-31 (S181) is the first Type 212A submarine of the German Navy...It was built by TKMS at the shipyards of Thyssen Nordseewerke of Emden and Howaldtswerke at Kiel. The baptism took place on March 20, 2002, and the submarine was ceremonially put into service along with its sister ship U 32 by German Minister of Defence Peter Struck in Eckernförde on October 19, 2005. U 31 is powered by one diesel engine and an electric motor driven by nine fuel cells, making it virtually undetectable...Korvettenkapitän Bert Petzold is the submarine's commanding officer.

The challenge

Underwater situational awareness is paramount for successful maritime operations. It enables a clear understanding of submerged environments to ensure the safety of naval vessels, divers and marine life.

Comprehensive awareness enables the detection of potential threats, the identification of underwater obstacles and the continuous monitoring of changing conditions, thus enhancing the tactical advantage of military forces.

Accurate situational awareness allows for timely decision-making, effective navigation and a swift response to emergent threats. Prioritising underwater situational awareness is paramount for military organisations in order to secure their missions, protect their assets and uphold maritime security.

Our solution

MOCASSIN is a state-of-the-art system for predicting sonar ranges. This advanced simulation solution enables the tactical assessment of the current situation and the virtual representation of future scenarios based on the existing data set.

As one of the most advanced operational tools in this field, MOCASSIN is regarded as an important complement to C3I / C4I systems and is already in use today by the German Navy as a sonar range prediction program and sonar analysis tool (sonar performance analyser).
Its core functions include the use of two logical computational models: the SIPSI+ ray model and the SNAP mode model. The data required for the automatic calculation of sonar performance can be imported either automatically via interfaces (e.g. for XBT or XSV probes) or entered manually.

Through MOCASSIN, naval operations benefit from precise and efficient predictions of sound ray intensity, thereby enhancing the comprehensive, up-to-date operational picture and optimising decision-making.
