OMS 150
Extreme range, ultra-high resolution optronic imaging system for submarinesThe challenge
Modern maritime security operations may require a submarine to spend most of its time at periscope depth, gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance over a stretch of sea or reconnoitring specific targets (ISR).
One of the primary roles of a submarine in ISR missions is to gather detailed Imagery Intelligence (high-resolution pictures and videos) that informs military strategy and tactical decision-making. Submarines equipped with advanced IMINT systems can perform extensive surveillance operations, covertly monitoring enemy movements and gathering critical data on maritime and terrestrial targets.
The continuous advancement of optical and opto-electronic sensor technologies allows new capabilities to be integrated into submarine IMINT sensors, including multispectral imaging and extreme-range cameras. As the space available on submarine masts is limited, clever sensor integration and compact design are crucial.
Ensuring that imagery and video can be transformed into actionable intelligence requires efficient system integration with the submarine’s combat management system, as well as powerful video processing capabilities.
Our solution
The OMS 150 is the latest enhanced sensor system in the proven OMS 100 range design. It integrates the latest advances in camera development to include Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) capability. The OMS 150 features a unique multispectral imaging and ranging payload that covers an extended light spectrum, delivering superior range and resolution performance across all wavelengths. This enables a total of five optronics sensors to support a range of new operational capabilities by providing true all-light, all-weather visual functionality. To minimise mast exposure time, a 360° Quick Look Round (QLR) can be conducted in three seconds. with full panoramic views taking less than three seconds.
This improves the situational awareness of the surface operational environment. Real-time image enhancement and an intuitive HMI environment, including automated functions, provide an unparalleled level of situational awareness while at periscope depth.
The latest sensor technology used in the OMS 150 is complemented by enhanced digital fibre optic data transfer capability and image processing technology, enabling images from up to three cameras to be displayed simultaneously. The intuitive, user-friendly HMI enables more automated operation of the optronics mast system. Combining sensor data by overlaying images significantly improves situational awareness. Real-time image enhancements and automatic target recognition leverage the OMS 150’s powerful optical output to produce real-time, actionable intelligence.
Additionally, the OMS 150 antenna interface supports large third-party electronic warfare and signal intelligence antennas, including direction-finding systems, thereby expanding the submarine mast's information-gathering capabilities.
